Why Choose Dental Implants?

There are many good reasons to choose dental implants. As well as aesthetic considerations, there are also a number of other long term benefits to having missing teeth replaced with dental implants. If you are not sure whether dental implants are right for you, read on to learn more about why they are a great choice for many patients.

Improve your sense of self esteem

Missing teeth affect some people more than others but from an aesthetic point of view, few people enjoy having visible gaps. Studies have shown that they can have a very negative effect on your confidence, sense of self-esteem and even your lifestyle. Even a single missing tooth can have real personal and professional consequences. In their attempts to hide gaps in their teeth, people often avoid smiling and laughing, while others may find themselves covering their mouth when speaking. This can impact communication and put a strain on interpersonal relationships.

It is not uncommon for the lack of confidence to make people reluctant to socialise, avoid meetings and presentations that put them in the spotlight or even put off applying for new positions and promotions.

With dental implants, you will benefit from a long-lasting replacement tooth that looks and feels completely natural – restoring your confidence and self-esteem for the long term.

Dental benefits of implants

From a dental perspective, there are many good reasons to choose dental implants. Left untreated, missing teeth can lead to many problems affecting both your teeth and gums.

For example, when we eat, the chewing action of your teeth stimulates the bone in your jaw and helps to keep it strong and healthy. When you have a missing tooth or teeth, however, this sensation is lost. This can cause the jaw bone to weaken and recede over time. One effect of this is the appearance of early aging as your face begins to physically change shape. A weaker jaw can also put otherwise healthy teeth at risk of becoming unstable or failing. Finally, your bite may be affected, which can increase wear on other teeth and also lead to pain and discomfort.

By replacing the missing root and not just the visible part of the tooth, dental implants can be used to prevent or even reverse many of these common problems. Unlike crowns and bridges, dental implants do not rely on the strength of other teeth, meaning that the integrity of your remaining, healthy teeth is not compromised.

How do dental implants work?

A complete dental implant has three parts:

The implant

This is a replacement root. It is made from titanium, which is biocompatible. This means that it is able to bond with the natural bone to form a strong, permanent root for your replacement tooth and help to strengthen the jaw.

The crown

This is the replacement tooth. A crown will be shaped and coloured to look and feel just like your natural teeth, so that nobody will ever know the difference.

The abutment

This is the component that connects the implant and the crown.

Once all of these components have been fitted, you will have a replacement tooth that, if looked after correctly, can easily last just as long as the remainder of your natural teeth.

Are dental implants painful?

Because dental implant treatment is a minor surgical procedure, there is a risk of some discomfort during healing. However, all surgery is conducted under anaesthetic meaning that you won’t feel a thing while the work is being done.

After the treatment, you’ll be given all the aftercare you need to ensure that you can start smiling again as soon as possible – and of course your dental team will always be no more than a phone call away should you have any concerns.
